The Many (Many) Bags of Kim Kardashian

The Many Bags of Kim Kardashian

We’ve been waiting a long time to do this one, and finally, The Many Bags of Kim Kardashian has arrived. The controversial reality star’s bag collection is easily the biggest one we’ve ever dug through, and you might be a little bit surprised by what we found: a lot of fairly conservative choices among the seventy-plus bags we found, many of them used repeatedly over the span of years.

“Kim Kardashian” has practically become a synonym for the excessive vacuousness of fame, but when you get down to it, Kim seems to both really enjoy her handbag collection and choose its contents wisely and with considerable care. She also seems to buy a lot of her bags herself, instead of receiving endless freebies and carrying whatever brands will send her. Hermes very famously does not give freebies or discounts to celebs, and Kim has most certainly spent plenty of her wealth on the acquisition of little (and big) orange boxes. Time and again, I found bags she’s used in the past couple of months popping up in paparazzi pictures from 2009 and 2010, which is a much more judicious use of her handbag backlog than many of us can claim. I’ve never been a Kardashian hater (or a Kardashian lover; I am mostly ambivalent), but after spending a few hours putting these photos together, I wouldn’t mind having a cocktail with Kim. Or looking through her closet, at the very least.

Cate Blanchett Doubles Up with Roger Vivier and Givenchy Bags

Cate Blanchett Roger Vivier Prismick Shoulder Bag Givenchy Lucrezia Satchel

Cate Blanchett was recently spotted heading to the theater in Manhattan for her matinee performance of The Maids. She’s carrying both a quilted, burgundy red Roger Vivier Prismick Shoulder Bag, which is a new-for-fall variation on one of the brand’s classic bags, and a taupe Givenchy Lucrezia Satchel. The aptly named Prismick is currently available in blue for $2,820 at MyTheresa.com. A new wine-colored version of the Lucrezia is also available for pre-order for$2,490 at Bergdorf Goodman.

Cate is extremely fond of Roger Vivier’s Prismick; we saw her with a two-tone black and white version of this bag in NYC last year. Frankly, I’m surprised we don’t see more celebs carrying this elegant design. In other news, I’m getting the distinct impression that jumpsuits are going to be really hot for fall amongst the NYC celeb set. (See also: Maggie Gyllenhaal.)

Kim Kardashian’s Daughter Poses With Chanel Bag in CR Fashion Book

North West Chanel Bag

I just can’t, you guys, this baby, she is so cute, look at her little cheeks.

*deep breath*

Ok! So. Now that my hormones have been shoved back into their proper places, I’m here to tell you that North West, instantly famous child of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, has her very own page in the forthcoming 5th issue of CR Fashion Book. North, of course, made her editorial fashion debut in Vogue as an infant.

This time, North was photographed by herself by Michael Avedon, complete with a Chanel brooch on her baby cardigan (which is certainly cashmere) and a teeny-tiny Chanel bag in her baby lap. Everything about this is ridiculous, and I love it.

Carine Roitfeld, CR’s founder and guiding force, is a big fan of the Kardashians; she had Kim grace the cover of a previous issue, and Kim’s spot within pop culture fits right in with much of the sometimes hyper-sexualized aesthetic that Roitfeld has honed over the years.

This image, of course, is a pretty sly wink at the Kardashians’ place within pop culture as well; constantly covered in expensive clothing and cultivated for fame from birth. When North gets a little older, she’ll have plenty of mom’s bags to borrow.

The Best Bag Deals for the Weekend of August 15

Bag Deals August 15

I’m not venturing much when I say that some people like neutral bags, while others prefer color. (Print people: we also have a bag for you.) During most times of the year, one variety of bag is far easier to find than others, but during this time of fall transition, you can find pretty much any color you’d like, from bright turquoise to graphite. In this week’s edition of Bag Deals, we have a little bit of both.

Rita Ora is the Latest Celeb to Graffiti Her Birkin

Hermes

Rita Ora Graffiti Hermes Birkin

Here’s UK pop star Rita Ora, out and about in London. Lately, celebs love to color on their Hermès Birkins because it is just so subversive, and Rita has apparently followed suit. Because sometimes it just isn’t gratifying enough to simply own a $10,000 handbag. Sometimes one just needs to scribble all over it, like it’s your 6th grade day planner.

Truthfully, this graffiti job looks a lot more profesh than the last one we saw on the arm of Real Housewives of Atlanta’s Nene Leakes. Lady Gaga was, of course, the probable initiator of this trend. You can see the rest of Rita Ora’s unvandalized designer handbag stash in “The Many Bags of Rita Ora.”

Which Trend Were You Wrong About?

Other Brands

Valentino Rockstud Bags

I’ve never liked admitting when I’m wrong about something, but when that something turns out to be a thing I enjoy that I had originally hated, that softens the blow a little bit. When it comes to handbags, the first things on that list are the Valentino Rockstud Bags.

When Valentino’s uber-successful line first debuted, it was with VaVaVoom bags during the brand’s Spring 2014 runway show. Valentino had been searching for its accessories identity for seasons, and it was beginning to feel like the brand’s then-fairly new creative directors might not find their groove. It felt like studs had been all over everything for years on end, and the finger-slips at the front of the VaVaVoom just didn’t quite make sense to me. (They still don’t, really, but the rest of the line is good enough to excuse it.)

A lot of you agreed with me in the comments on that initial review, but somehow, Valentino went on to tweak and expand the collection, making me and thousands of others into believers over the intervening three years. They’re surpassed “trend” and now seem like they’re headed toward “classic” – a bag that the brand can tweak and reissue to great customer response for years to come. I’m glad I was wrong about them.

Which bag or trend did you dismiss at first, only to come around to it later? Let us know in the comments.
